The Moorlands Inn Halifax Wedding Photographer

Hello, I’m Dave. I’m a documentary wedding photographer based here in West Yorkshire, and the Moorlands is a short drive up the road from me. If you are looking for someone to photograph your day there, this page should give you a feel for how I work and what the venue is like to photograph in.

The Moorlands Inn sits up on the tops at Ogden, on the A629 between Halifax and Keighley, with Ogden Water and the open moor on the doorstep. It is family run, and both of its spaces – the Marquee and the Loft – hold a civil ceremony licence, so the ceremony and the rest of the day happen in the same place.

A bride and groom stand closely together in an open field under a large tree, with a clear blue sky and wispy clouds above. The groom has vibrant blue hair. This peaceful, picturesque moment is a testament to exquisite wedding photography.

My Approach to Wedding Photography at The Moorlands Inn

I photograph the day as it happens. Most of it you will not notice me doing. I will get everyone together for the family groups you want and I will find you both twenty quiet minutes for portraits, but the rest of the day is yours to enjoy rather than pose for.

I photograph weddings right across West Yorkshire and I have worked at the Moorlands. You get 800 or more edited images back within three weeks, and there are 73 five-star Google reviews from couples I have worked with.

Photographing a Wedding at The Moorlands Inn

The Moorlands is up on the tops and the weather does as it pleases. That is less of a problem than people expect, because low cloud over the moors photographs far better than flat sunshine ever does, and there is a covered shelter and the balcony to work under when it turns.

The Marquee and the Loft photograph differently. The Marquee gives you room to move and a clean background behind the top table; the Loft is the smaller room, and the balcony off it looking out over the moors is the best twenty seconds of walking you will find this side of Halifax.

A bride and groom stand outdoors in a dreamy Lincoln setting. The groom, in a brown suit, kisses the smiling bride on the cheek, her off-shoulder lace gown glowing. The blurred forest backdrop adds magic to this moment captured by photographer Dave Waller Photography.

Portraits do not need long here. Ogden Water is a couple of minutes away and the moor starts more or less at the car park, so fifteen or twenty minutes is plenty for the two of you. Wind is the thing to plan around rather than rain – it is exposed up there, and hair has a mind of its own.

The Inn and Its Setting

The Moorlands is a family run country restaurant that has grown into a wedding venue, and it still feels like one. You are looked after by the people who own it rather than by a wedding department, and the packages are put together around what you actually want rather than picked off a list.

It sits right beside Ogden Water Local Nature Reserve, which is where a good number of the walking-out pictures happen. The building faces the main road, but everything behind it is open moorland.

Location of The Moorlands Inn

Keighley Road, Ogden, Halifax, West Yorkshire, HX2 8XD. It is on the A629, the main road between Halifax and Keighley, about ten minutes out of Halifax and twenty from Bradford. I am a Halifax wedding photographer, so it is close to home.

Why Choose The Moorlands Inn?

The Moorlands does something not many venues manage: it works for two hundred people and it works for thirty. The Marquee takes 200 seated or 400 standing and the Loft takes 60 seated or 80 standing, so the venue fits the day rather than the day being trimmed to fit the venue. Both are hired exclusively, so whichever you take is yours.

And it is up on the moors. You are ten minutes from Halifax, but the view out of the back is open country in every direction with Ogden Water on the doorstep. That is a rare thing to have within reach of a town, and it is what makes the pictures from here look like nowhere else.

Planning Your Moorlands Inn Wedding

There are no bedrooms at the Moorlands Inn, so it’s worth helping your guests book somewhere to stay in Halifax and organising taxis for the end of the night. Letting everyone know the plan with their invitations saves a lot of last-minute calls.

I keep portraits to around twenty minutes, so you’re not away from your guests for long, and with the Signature and Complete packages we pop out again after sunset for fifteen minutes of twilight pictures. It also really helps to share your running order with the venue team and me a few weeks before, so everyone knows when the ceremony, the drinks, the speeches and the first dance are happening.

The Moorlands Wedding Questions

The Marquee takes 200 seated or 400 standing, and the Loft 60 seated or 80 standing, so it works for a big day and a small one.

Yes. Both the Marquee and the Loft hold a civil ceremony licence, so the ceremony and the reception can happen in the same place.

There are no bedrooms on site. Halifax is about ten minutes down the road and has plenty of options, and most couples arrange taxis for the end of the night.

Both spaces are indoors, and outside there is a covered hog roast shelter and the balcony off the Loft, so there is always somewhere dry to stand. Low cloud over the moors also photographs better than a blank blue sky, so a grey day is not the problem people expect it to be.

The patio and the balcony off the Loft are the two obvious spots, and Ogden Water and the open moor are a couple of minutes away for the walking-out pictures. Nothing takes long here because nothing is far.

Yes, the catering is done in house, and a hog roast is one of the options – there is a covered shelter outside for it.

Both the Marquee and the Loft are hired on an exclusive basis, so whichever space you book is yours for the day.

About twenty minutes for the two of you and roughly the same for the family groups. I would rather give you one short, good stretch than keep you away from your guests all afternoon.

Yes – I photograph right across West Yorkshire. If you are still choosing a venue there is a guide to Yorkshire wedding venues on the site.
