My Top Tips for Couples Who Dread Posing for Photos

BY DAVE WALLER PHOTOGRAPHY | TIPS AND ADVICE, WEDDINGS

“We’re not keen on posing – help!”

You’re not alone! Almost every couple I meet tells me they feel awkward in front of a camera or that posing just isn’t their thing. It’s completely understandable. Having a professional camera aimed at you isn’t something most of us experience every day, and it can feel a bit unnatural at first.

The good news? You don’t need to worry. While most of the photos I capture on a wedding day are candid and natural, there’s always a little time set aside for some portraits of the two of you. It’s a lovely chance for you to step away from the busy-ness of the day and just enjoy a quiet moment together while I create relaxed, natural images.

Now, here’s the key: these portraits are meant to feel relaxed and effortless. No stiff poses, no awkward moments—just you two, caught up in the joy of your wedding day. You’ll be smiling, chatting, and basking in that post-ceremony glow. The nerves of the morning will have melted away, and this time together will be a welcome pause in the day’s whirlwind.

My Approach to Couple Portraits

I don’t believe in overly posed photography. Instead, I’ll guide you subtly, allowing your natural chemistry to take centre stage. Whether you’re a touchy-feely pair or more understated in your affection, I’ll adapt to what feels most comfortable for you. If you’re feeling a bit unsure, I’ve got some light-hearted prompts to help you relax and even laugh together.

My goal is to make this experience easy, fun, and authentic. By the time we’re done, you’ll feel more like yourselves and forget you’re even in front of a camera.

5 Tips to Help You Relax for Your Wedding Photos

  1. Choose a photographer you connect with.
You’ll spend a lot of time with your photographer on your wedding day, so feeling comfortable around them is essential. Look for someone whose personality and style make you feel at ease.
  2. Consider a pre-wedding photoshoot.
A pre-wedding shoot might sound daunting, but it’s an excellent way to get used to being in front of the camera. It’s also a great opportunity to build rapport with your photographer and discover which poses feel most natural for you both.
  3. Don’t overthink the idea of ‘posing’.
Stiff, formal poses rarely work well. Instead, focus on being yourselves. Your photographer will offer gentle guidance to help create relaxed, natural images. Sometimes, a small adjustment is all it takes to make a big difference.
  4. Be authentic.
Forget trying to replicate photos you’ve seen online. Forced poses can feel awkward and look unnatural. Just be yourselves—talk, laugh, and enjoy each other’s company. Your love will naturally shine through.
  5. Trust your photographer.
You’ve chosen your photographer because you admire their work and feel comfortable with them. Trust their expertise and know they’re committed to creating images you’ll treasure. Remember, the portrait session is just a small part of your day, so enjoy the moment and let it be a time to connect with your new spouse.
