Cave Castle History

The castle as you currently see it was built in 1875.  Records of a building on the site date back to 1086 where the site has been home to many buildings.  The site of Cave Castle was bought by the Barnard family in 1748 and although the house took on many forms between then and 1925 the house stayed with the Barnard family.  There is not much known about the early building on the site, there is an escape tunnel from the Church close by which dates back to before 1791.  One famous face to have lived at cave castle is George Washington the first President of the US.  He is said to have lived at Cave Castle before he moved to America.

As we approach the end of the Second World War Cave Castle was used as an officer’s mess and the barracks which were built on the grounds of the castle housed prisoners of war.  Not long after the War ended the castle became a hotel.
